They say that after food, shelter and companionship the first thing that a human instinctively seeks is entertainment. We all need something to do at the end of the workday or while we're on vacation and luckily for those in the Salem area there are lots of options. You could be in town for a conference on the financial principals of someone like Dennis Gartman or just be a resident and need to indulge in an evening staycation. Here are some of the best options no matter who you are.
Most people know the history of Salem as the site of the Witch Trials at the end of the 17th century. If you're interested in finding out more about this time there are many events in the city to educate you. You could bring out your inner thespian by taking part in a recreation of one of the trials as a member of the jury at Cry Innocent or go on a Hocus Pocus Tour highlighting some of the most historic locations throughout the city. Then of course there is the Salem Witch Museum. Those that are more interested in learning about the Puritan way of life, from their cooking to their hand garden tools can also visit the Pioneer Village.
For a little less fear and a little more fun there are lots of other museums and attractions throughout the city. Spend a fun afternoon at the New England Pirate Museum or one of the nation's largest museums, the Peabody Essex. There are also many chances to experience coastal New England at its best with a cruise or ferry ride. Salem Ferry is a 45-minute ride in a high-speed catamaran, while Mahi Mahi offers cruises and charters. This could be a great selection if you're planning entertainment for a family event or womens hockey tournament.
For those looking for a night out at the theatre there are two companies operating in the area. The Griffin Theatre presents plays, children's entertainment and comedy acts in a small black box theatre. Salem Theatre Company is the larger professional theatre and has a music series as well as stage shows. For more music options there is frequently live music at Victoria Station, a weekly open mic at Vic's Boathouse and many other venues that feature local artists. This could be a great night out to compliment the massage gift certificates you got for that special someone's birthday.
There are some great festivals and events that come through the city each year and some are not to be missed. Naturally, Halloween is an especially eventful time of the year in Salem but there are also lots of things to do the rest of the year. At one you could enter a car sweepstakes and at another see one of your favorite bands. Visit the city's Tourism website for a full list of events.
